This is a research action project. We are currently initiating C-Scope at our elementary campus and was advised to start improving academic vocabulary. I will be researching materials that offer list of words and methods or ways for teachers to reach and engage students to understand and use the new vocabulary.
Examining What We Do to Improve Our Schools Sandra Harris, Stacey Edmonson, Julie Combs
ReplyDeletePlease note: My inquiry was changed this week due to a recent workshop my principal had at Region XII with regards to C-Scope and academic vocabulary. I am writing this plan, based on my “new” research project. (This is the third one and the third blog now.)
Tool 8.1 CARE Model: Planning Tool
Identify Concerns that must change (look to the future)
(Assign points to concerns from 1 to 3 in the order of the most important issues to consider.)
1. C-Scope has gaps regarding academic vocabulary.
2. Our LEP population is not developing the academic vocabulary and each year they get progressively behind and are lower in standardized assessment.
3. Teachers must teach the vocabulary starting in PreK. The students will not “get it” or understand it by osmosis.
Identify Affirmations that must be sustained (look to the present)
(Assign points to affirmations from 1 to 3 in the order of the most important issues to consider.)
1. Teachers are diligently working to implement C-Scope.
2. The new curriculum supports most of the academic vocabulary.
3. Have the teachers tell us about ways they are already working on new vocabulary.l
SMART Recommendations that must be implemented:
(Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely)
(Assign points to recommendations from 1 to 3 in the order of the most important recommendations to implement.)
1. Create a list of vocabulary for each grade level.
2. Read several resources for ideas on teaching vocabulary.
3. Give a workshop with this information.
EVALUATE – Specifically and Often
(Identify the best ways to evaluate the implemented recommendations.)
1. Lesson Plans
2. Observations of teachers
3. Feedback / concerns/ future workshops for support and sharing of ideas. How do you work this into the schedule?
ACTION PLANNING TEMPLATE
ReplyDeleteGOAL: To improve academic vocabulary for grades Prek – 2.
ACTION STEPS PERSON(S) RESPONSIBLE TIMELINE: START/END NEEDED RESOURCES EVALUATION
1. Gather academic vocabulary lists for grades PreK – 2nd Ms. Callentine Start: December 2011.
End: January, 2012 Marzano has a book on building vocabulary; will be finding other resources
2. Gathering ideas and ways for teachers to use to build academic vocabulary Ms. Callentine Start: December 2011
End: March, 2012 Marzano, ESL in the mainstream; Bringing words to life by Isabel L. Beck, et al.
3. Write and copy diagrams into PowerPoint for presentation as going along. Ms. Callentine February 2012 Posting info to blog and my “paper” to prepare for presentation
4. Meet with teachers on each grade level to see what they are currently doing to teach vocab. Ms. Callentine and administrator January or February 2012 Time with Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade teams.
5. Review new curriculum materials to see if already contain vocabulary lists. Ms. Callentine, Feb. 2012 Curriculum materials for each grade level
6. Steps #4 and #5 have ME looking at their curriculum. It seems like it would be a better idea if each grade level looked at it with me. I can copy needed materials or type up the list as we go along. This will help with “buy in” and they need to become familiar with their curriculum anyhow. Ms. Callentine and administrator January 2012
7. Create a presentation / report with suggested ways to present new vocabulary into the classroom. Ms. Callentine; March or April 2012 Reference all resources used
8. Create list for each grade level PreK – 2nd for recommended academic vocabulary. Ms. Callentine March or April 2012 Reference all resources used
Okay, I didn't get the whole template posted correctly. I'm learning though!
